Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Principal of the Royal Academy of Music, has announced that Professor Christopher Elton, FRAM, is now Professor Emeritus of the Academy. Professor Elton stepped down as head of keyboard in July, 2011 after 24 years in the post. In a statement, the Principal said: “As eminent teacher, ambassador, University of London professor, distinguished juror and head of department, Christopher has made this post his own with quite extraordinary dedication, artistic and intellectual flair, alongside a legendarily indefatigable energy. Under his leadership, piano studies at the Academy have become an emblem of international ambition and excellence.

Professor Freeman-Atwood continued: “I am delighted that Christopher's contribution to life at the Academy will remain significant in all the areas I have listed above, apart from the role of head of department. I feel exceptionally lucky that Christopher will continue with his important work as one of the Academy's and the UK's most renowned musical pedagogues.”
